About Clay

Clay Whittington is an exceptional pianist, vocalist, and entertainer. With influences from artists such as Billy Joel, Elton John, Floyd Cramer, and Josh Groban, he brings an interesting blend of music to the stage.
Born and raised in Kinston, North Carolina, and a pianist since the age of eight, Clay studied music at East Carolina University. He recently departed from North Carolina, where he served as choirmaster, organist, and music director for multiple United Methodist Churches.
Clay’s performances have attracted much public attention and press. In 2012, he started touring his original improvisation performance, “Hymnprov,” a series of impromptu piano pieces based on the melodies of popular hymns. In 2013, he released his first solo album around this concept.
Clay has directed music for multiple theatrical productions in and around North Carolina and most recently directed music and played the piano to sold-out houses for Ring of Fire, a musical featuring the work of Johnny Cash, with the Thalian Association in Wilmington, NC.
Clay is a member of the American Choral Directors Association and the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music & Worship Arts. He resides in Seaside, California with his wife, Elizabeth, who is serving in the United States Army.

Clay's solo piano album, Hymnprov, debuted in the Fall of 2013. The concept of the album can be found in the title, a fusion of "Hymn" and "improvisation." Recorded in Durham, North Carolina, Clay laid down the album in one take, improvising on ten favorite hymns found in the United Methodist Hymnal. The album is available for purchase through many online music stores including iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon. CDs may be purchased by contacting Clay directly (Email Clay).
